This page lists every Excel function used in the course with its French-language equivalent. Functions are grouped by the module where they are first introduced.
Note on locales: If your Excel uses a French locale, function names and list separators differ (e.g., AVERAGE → MOYENNE; , → ;). The formulas in this course use English function names and comma separators. Use the table below to translate.
Module 1 — First steps

TODAY |
AUJOURDHUI |
Current date |
MONTH |
MOIS |

Module 2 — Frequency tables & charts
COUNTIF |

COUNTIFS |
NB.SI.ENS |
Count cells matching multiple criteria |
SUMIF |
SOMME.SI |

Module 3 — Histograms & cumulative curves
COUNTIFS |
NB.SI.ENS |
Class counts with range criteria (>=lower, <upper) |
| PivotTable grouping |
Regroupement TCD |
Right-click a numeric field → Group to bin automatically |
Module 4 — Central tendency
AVERAGE |
MOYENNE |
Arithmetic mean |
MEDIAN |
MEDIANE |
Median (50th percentile) |
MODE.SNGL |
MODE.SIMPLE |
Single most frequent value |
SUMPRODUCT |
SOMMEPROD |
Weighted mean (=SUMPRODUCT(values, weights)/SUM(weights)) |
Module 5 — Position & boxplot
QUARTILE.EXC |
QUARTILE.EXCLURE |
Exclusive quartiles (position (n+1)*q) — course standard |
PERCENTILE.EXC |
CENTILE.EXCLURE |
Exclusive percentiles — course standard |
MIN |
MIN |
Minimum (for five-number summary) |
MAX |
MAX |
Maximum (for five-number summary) |
| Box & Whisker chart |
Graphique Boîte à moustaches |
Insert → Charts → Statistical → Box and Whisker |
Why QUARTILE.EXC? The course follows the (n+1)*q position formula (OpenStax §2.2), which matches Excel’s exclusive method. QUARTILE.INC (inclusive) gives different values on small samples — do not mix them.
Module 6 — Dispersion
VAR.S |
VAR.S |
Sample variance (denominator n-1) — course standard |
STDEV.S |
ECARTYPE.STANDARD |
Sample standard deviation — course standard |
VAR.P |
VAR.P.N |
Population variance (denominator n) |
STDEV.P |
ECARTYPE.PEARSON |
Population standard deviation |
SUMSQ |
SOMME.CARRES |
Sum of squares (for variance shortcut) |
Sample vs population: This is a descriptive statistics course. We use the sample formulas (.S) by default because real business data are almost always samples. The population variants (.P) are shown for completeness.
Module 7 — Shape
SKEW |
COEFFICIENT.ASYMETRIE |
Adjusted Fisher–Pearson skewness (sample) |
Kurtosis: No Excel function is used — kurtosis is treated conceptually only (names and pictures).
Module 8 — Bivariate I
COUNTIFS |
NB.SI.ENS |
Two-way contingency table counts |
| PivotTable (two fields) |
TCD (deux champs) |
Rows = one variable, Columns = another, Values = Count |
| XY Scatter chart |
Nuage de points |
Insert → Charts → Scatter |
Module 9 — Bivariate II
COVARIANCE.S |
COVARIANCE.STANDARD |
Sample covariance |
COVARIANCE.P |
COVARIANCE.PEARSON |
Population covariance |
CORREL |
COEFFICIENT.CORRELATION |
Pearson correlation coefficient r |
SLOPE |
PENTE |
Least-squares slope b |
INTERCEPT |
ORDONNEE.ORIGINE |
Least-squares intercept a |
RSQ |
COEFFICIENT.DETERMINATION |
Coefficient of determination R² |
| Data Analysis → Regression |
Données → Analyse → Régression |

French locale tips
- List separator: French Excel uses
; instead of , between arguments.
- English:
=AVERAGE(A1:A10) → French: =MOYENNE(A1:A10) (same here)
- English:
=IF(A1>0, "pos", "neg") → French: =SI(A1>0; "pos"; "neg")
- Decimal separator: French uses
, (comma) for decimals; English uses . (point).
- The CSV files in this course use
. as decimal separator.
- Function names: The table above gives the exact French names. If a function is not listed, it may not have a localised name (rare).
Unverified French names
The following French names are inferred from Microsoft documentation and have not been tested in a live French Excel. Please verify before relying on them in an exam setting:
QUARTILE.EXC → QUARTILE.EXCLURE
PERCENTILE.EXC → CENTILE.EXCLURE
VAR.S → VAR.S (may be VAR.S in both locales)
STDEV.S → ECARTYPE.STANDARD
COVARIANCE.S → COVARIANCE.STANDARD
COVARIANCE.P → COVARIANCE.PEARSON
SKEW → COEFFICIENT.ASYMETRIE
RSQ → COEFFICIENT.DETERMINATION
